Christmas Joy

You are invited to Glencoe Learning Center's Christmas program, Christmas Joy. The program will be on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 6:00PM. It will feature music performances by GLC's K3 and prekindergarten classes as well as a poem recitation by these classes. The program will also include a message by Pastor Barry and special performances by the students of Glencoe Classical Academy.

Thankful Tree

Can you believe that Thanksgiving is only a week from tomorrow?! It seems as though time is flying by this fall!

Here's a cute craft idea that we wanted to share with you. It would make a great project for preschoolers and their families to do together while celebrating all of the blessings God gives to us. Once you're finished, share your pictures on our Facebook page. We'd love to see your trees filled with leaves of thankfulness!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Materials

• Small tree branch
• Flowerpot
• Pebbles, rocks, or marbles
• Card stock or colored paper

• Hole punch
• Twine or string
• Clear holiday lights (optional)

Total Time Needed: 1 Hour

Instructions

1. To make the tree, insert a branch in a flowerpot filled with pebbles, rocks, or marbles. Cut leaf shapes from card stock or colored paper, use a hole punch to make a hole in each, and attach a loop of twine or string.

2. At your gathering, have guests jot down a note of thanks on a leaf and hang it from the tree. Operation Christmas Child

Dear GLC Parents:

The holidays are quickly approaching and we are excited to be participating in the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child project this year. The small gifts of love and messages of hope through Jesus Christ are delivered to needy children overseas.

Parents and students can start shopping together and have fun collecting small toys, school supplies, and other small gifts for an impoverished child. You will find a list of items below that can be placed in your shoebox for either a boy or girl in age ranges of 2-4, 5-9, and/or 10-14 years old. After your small gifts are placed in your shoebox, we invite you or your student to write a small note to introduce a hurting child to God’s love and place it in your box. The classes will be having a contest to see which class can bring in the most shoeboxes, and there will be a special surprise for the class that brings in the most shoeboxes.

Please note the list of suggested toys and the list of those not acceptable. Your child will need to have his or her shoebox in no later than November 14th. To help defray the cost of shipping, Samaritan’s Purse requests $7.00 be included in an envelope with your shoebox. When wrapping your shoebox, please wrap the lid separately from the box so that the box is not sealed; then place the lid on the shoebox and wrap two rubber bands around the width and length of your box. Slip a piece of paper (do not tape) indicating the age range (2-4, 5-9, or 10-14) and whether the shoebox is for a boy or girl. We will print out the labels and attach them to the lids before taking them to the drop off site.

Do not include: used or damaged goods, war related items such as guns, knives or military figures, chocolate or food: liquids or lotions, medications or vitamins, breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers, aerosol cans

Fall is in the air!

"A Pumpkin Poem"

One day I found two pumpkin seeds.

I planted one and pulled the weeds.

It sprouted roots and a big, long vine.

A pumpkin grew; I called it mine.

The pumpkin was quite round and fat.

(I really am quite proud of that.)

But there is something I'll admit

That has me worried just a bit.

I ate the other seed, you see.

Now will it grow inside of me?

(I'm so relieved since I have found

That pumpkins only grow in the ground!)

Tomorrow is the first day of fall! With fall comes some of the best things in life such as the crisp, cool autumn breeze, beautiful fall foliage, pumpkin-flavored desserts and coffees, s'mores and campfires, and even football! While everyone at GLC is excited about many of these things, we are VERY excited about the FALL CARNIVAL!!!

This year's carnival will be on Friday, October 21st at 6:30PM. We've decided to change things up a bit, so rather than have trunk-or-treat and costumes, we're going to celebrate the season with fall-themed fun! We're going to have games, activities, and even pony rides! And of course, what's fall (and fun) without food? We'll have hot dogs, popcorn, boiled peanuts, and other great treats for everyone!

Ms. Wanda and your child's teacher would love to have your help with the carnival! If you have ideas for booths, please share them. If you can spare some time to lend a hand, let your child's teacher know or sign up on your class's volunteer list. Also, if you are interested in donating items for the fall carnival, Ms. Wanda has a list of needed items.

Everyone at Glencoe Baptist Church, Learning Center, and Academy is excited about this year's carnival, and we want each of you to be just as excited! As you make plans to attend, be sure to invite your family, friends, and neighbors to come out and enjoy the fall festivities and fellowship!

In the Sunshine & the Rain

It's official! The 2011-2012 preschool year is off to a running start! With every new school year comes many new faces, and we are excited to have many new students join us and to have many students return. Also with a new school year comes many milestones and memories and even some challenges. As life seems to continually grow busier, it seems that challenges tend to present themselves more frequently. Unfortunately, challenges are often accompanied by discouragement. My goal with this week's blog is to simply encourage you as you begin to settle into the routine of parents of a preschoolers.

Throughout His Word, God promises that He will be with us. He promises to never desert us or abandon us. In Isaiah 41:10 God says to Jacob, "Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." What a promise! When we are faced with frustrations and disappointments and even in the midst of catastrophes, our Father is with us. Just as encouraging as this is the realization that this same promise is true for our children. God is always with them--even when we, their parents, can't be.

Isn't it simply encouraging to know that the same God who knew us before He created us in our mothers' wombs is still with us today, at this very moment, and will always be with us (Jeremiah 1:5)?

My prayer for each of you is that, as the school year progresses, you will constantly and consciously notice God and His love surrounding you and your child.
