Count Down: Back To School!

Glencoe Learning Center is eagerly preparing for August 31st - The First Day of School. We did not close our doors for the summer or cut our hours, but we did take a break from the packed curriculum that the school year provides. We took some time to get dirty, play dress up, and take walks with umbrellas. Time to play in the water, with some sand, an with some shaving cream! We had movie days and silly days, quiet days and not so quiet days. We have had a blast this summer!

The boxes of classroom curriculum and lesson plan books have arrived. We are unpacking and planning our classroom designs. Getting the walls ready for a fresh coat of paint and picking out new posters to hang. We have new friends to make and new teachers to get to know. 2009-2010 is going to be an exiting year and we know God has awesome plans in store for us.

Be praying for our Pre-K students as they take the next big step in life and move to Kindergarten. They are very excited. They are all moving on to different places some are staying and some are moving on to other schools. We are particularly excited about our students moving up to GCA. We get to see them grow and learn even though they are leaving our classrooms.

We hope that parents will start getting ready for the school year too. If you are interested in donating some supplies, there is a list at the end with ideas. A few parents have mentioned that early bedtimes are coming back soon while other have mentioned stocking up and easy lunch items. In the GLC newsletter, there is an article of things to make the start of the school year go a little smoother! Keep us posted of any new ideas and call us with any questions!

Umbrella Parade

Our K3 & K4 Classes enjoyed a walk around campus in the shade today. They had their annual Umbrella Parade! Here is a glimpse at some of their fun!

And there they go...off on their adventure in the hot Florida sun! I hope that we all take a lesson from our K3 & K4 class friends...find time to just take a walk this week-end and enjoy the warm sun adn time with our families.

Lunch Box Idea

Cinnamon Apple Chips

• 2 Cups Unsweetened Apple Juice (Publix brand is a great choice)
• 1 Cinnamon Stick
• 2 Washington Red Delicious Apples (Or your family's favorite apple)

1. In a large skillet or saucepan, combine apple juice and cinnamon stick; bring to a low boil while preparing apples
2. With a paring knife, slice off 1/2 inch from tops and bottoms of apples and discard (or eat). Stand apples on either cut end; cut cross wise in 1/8inch-thick slices, rotating apple as necessary to cut even slices
3. Drop slices into boiling juice; cook 4-5 minutes or until slices appear translucent and lightly golden. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
4. With slotted spatula, remove apple slices from juice and pat dry. Arrange slices on wire racks, making sure none overlap. Place racks on middle shelf in oven; bale 30-40 minutes until slices are lightly browned and almost dry to the touch. Let chips cool on racks completely before storing in an airtight container.

Makes about 40 chips

Tip: There is no need to core apples. Boiling in juice several minutes softens the cores and removes the seeds.
